Thinking Questions for Chapter 2

You guys have learnt the definition of rational and irrational numbers, here are 2 thinking questions for you:

1) rational numbers + irrational numbers = ?

2) rational numbers x irrational numbers = ?

Please explain your answers using proper english:
1) Do not use too much abbrevations.
2) No vulgarities

sry miss lee i dunno answer i guess i think 1 is becasue 4.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751058209749445923 0781640628620899862803482534211706798214808651328230664709384460 9550582231725359408128481117450284102701938521105559644622948954 9303819644288109756659334461284756482337867831652712019091456485 6692346034861045432664821339360726024914127372458700660631558817 4881520920962829254091715364367892590360011330530548820466521384 1469519415116094330572703657595919530921861173819326117931051185 4807446237996274956735188575272489122793818301194912983367336244 0656643086021394946395224737190702179860943702770539217176293176 7523846748184676694051320005681271452635608277857713427577896091 7363717872146844090122495343014654958537105079227968925892354201 9956112129021960864034418159813629774771309960518707211349999998 3729780499510597317328160963185950244594553469083026425223082533 4468503526193118817101000313783875288658753320838142061717766914 7303598253490428755468731159562863882353787593751957781857780532 171226806613001927876611195909216420198

1) rational number + irrational number = irrational number.
2) rational number x irrational number = irrational number

Explaination: ( applies to both questions ) When the rational number is added to the irrational number, there would be a : example(.416678467299) it would be never ending. Also, when the rational number is mulitplied by the irrational number, the decimal behind would also still be never ending.

(1) Irrational number+Rational number= Irrational number.
(2) Irrational number+Rational number= Irrational number.

I put that as my answer in (1) because when an irrational number and a rational number is added together, it will still be a irrational number e.g. 0.5+3.141592654= An irrational number.

And I put that as my answer in (2) because of the same logic as my reason in (1).

2)Irrational number

Since irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be expressed in fractions or exact decimal equivelant, any number added or multipied will result in an irrational number.

Irrational numbers cannot be expressed in fractions thus any number cannot be added or multiplied.

I put this answer as when
eg.5+5.233333....=10.233333....
(irrational)
It also applies to Q.2

1)Rational numbers + irrational numbers = irrational numbers

2)Rational numbers x Irrational numbers= irrational numbers

Explanation :

First , you must get your facts right . A rational number is a number that CAN be expressed as a fraction or decimal, whereas an irrational number is a number that CANNOT be expressed as fraction or decimal. Hence whenever there is an irrational number ( eg : square root of 3)and a rational number( eg :0.95) , the sum would still be a irrational number as the decimal is continuous.
The above logic also applies to the second answer . (Hint : Rational number ( Positive number ) x Irrational Number ( Negative number ) = Irrational Number ( Negative number )

Sorrie Ms Lee for not being able to get the symbol for square root

Happy CNY & hope this 'project' of yours is a success .

1) irrational number
2) irrational number

Explaination:
1) If the irrational number is square root 2,no matter what the rational number is,the sum of the two numbers will be irrational number because the square root 2 will still remain. eg. √2+1/2= (1+2√2)/2
2) If the irrational number is square root 2,no matter what the rational number is,the product of the two numbers will be irrational number because the square root 2 will still remain. eg. √2x1/2= √2/2

1)Irrational
2)Irrational
If a rational number adds an irrational number, the number will be irrational because a whole number plus a number which is not a whole number will still not be a whole number (e.g. 3 + 3.666666... =6.66666666....)And the same theory applies with question 2

1) rational number + irrational number = irrational number.
2) rational number x irrational number = irrational number

Explanation: A irrational number is a number that cannot be expressed as a fraction or decimal, whereas an rational number is a number that can, this is why when irrational numbers are added or multiplied to rational numbers, the answer would always be an irrational number.

2)irrational number

For question 1, irrational number +rational number is irrational because irrational numbers cannot be divided and whatever number you add you would still get a irrational number.
For question 2 , the same reason applys too.

Because Irrational No.cannot be divided and whatever number you add you will always get a irrational number.
It is the same for the times.

Explanation: for question one,no matter how you add them, the behind decimal will still go on. for question two,no matter how you multiply them, the decimal will still have no ending. Sorry if my explanation sounds weird, but that's how i think the explanation is. in other words,i meant that i dunno how to explain also.

Sorry ahh.....

explanation: Irrational number is not divisable by any number. Hence, the answer should be irrational. The same explanation applys to the second question.
